The Burlington Healthy Community Coalition supports a variety of activities, educational programs and recognition awards for youth in Burlington.
Late Night Gym
This county-wide activity provides a safe and alcohol/drug free environment for students once a week during the school year at the Burlington-Edison High School Gym. Burlington Parks and Recreation website: www.ci.burlington.wa.us
Activities
The Burlington Healthy Community Coalition provides support to Youth Appreciation Day and Senior Grad Night. These activities provide Burlington youth opportunities to have fun in a safe and healthy environment.
Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Programs
The following prevention programs are administered in schools to help Burlington youth learn important skills for navigating the challenges they face during adolescence.
Sembrando Salud is a culturally sensitive tobacco and alcohol use prevention program specifically adapted for Hispanic youth and their families. The program is designed to improve parent-child communication skills as a way of improving and maintaining healthy youth decision-making. Sembrando Salud contains a school and family curriculum. Second Step The award-winning SECOND STEP violence prevention program integrates academics with social and emotional learning. Kids from preschool through Grade 8 learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, and cooperation. These essential life skills help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home.

Youth Award Programs
Award recognition programs such as the Citizenship Award are given to outstanding eighth graders and the Senior Scholarships show Burlington young people their community recognizes good character and hard work. Our award recipents for the 2008-2009 awards are:
SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Eddie Aviles is the 2008-2009 Burlington Healthy Community Coalition's Senior Scholarship receipent. He received a scholarship in the amount of $1000 for outstanding support of healthy life choices and for fulfilling the mission of the Burlington Healthy Community Coalition. Congratulations Eddie!
CITIZENSHIP AWARD WINNERS
Burlington Healthy Community Coalition's Citizenship Award began in 1996. Each year, BHCC has recognized an outstanding student from each elementary school in the Burlington-Edison School District. We ask the 7th and 8th grade teachers to nominate an 8th grade student that has demonstrated the following qualities:
· A positive and helpful attitude
· Respect towards fellow students and staff members
· A sincere concern and care for classmates
